An App called SIP-VOIP is a VOIP software available on jailbroken iPod Touches and the iPhone. Unlike other VOIP applications it has been confirmed to work on both of Apple’s Devices.

SIP VOIP

Their plan was to make a VOIP compatible with the iPod Touch to bring an iPhone like experience to users without access to the iPhone. Check it out and tell us what you think in the comments.

April 8th, 2008

Posted by russell

Fabrizio La Rosa has released iSynCal 6.0, an application that allows the syncing of iCal calendars between multiple Macs (using Apple File Sharing), multiple users on the same Mac, and between a Mac and an iPod. This removes the need for a .mac account to perform iCal syncing. iSynCal requires Mac OS X v10.3 or higher and iCal v1.5 or higher.

New in this release:

  • Now fully compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 “Leopard”
  • Dropped support for 10.3. Mac OS X 10.4 or later is now required, but iSynCal can still sync calendars between a Mac running 10.4 or 10.5 and another running 10.3 or 10.2.
  • # Smart Sync also synchronize calendars deletions (a new option is available in the sync Options drawer)
  • Many other “under the hood” code changes and optiomizations

Turn your iPod Touch into a Gameboy Advance, with a just released emulator for iPod Touch/iPhone, based on Expohase’s gpSP port.

Things that still need work:

  • Compatibility is lower than usual but many games are playable. This is being worked on as a high priority.
  • Sound output is disabled, but it IS being emulated. So performance will only get better as this feature gets worked on.
  • Auto frameskip might be off. Switch to manual frameskip if needed.
  • GUI and instructions need a lot of work.

You will need to obtain a copy of the GBA BIOS (gba_bios.bin) and place that under /Applications/gpSPhone.app/. For obvious legal reasons, we can’t provide a download for that.

Download: gpSPhone v0.0.4

Since the introduction and jailbreak of the iPhone many apps have been created to extend the functionality of it. And with the iPod touch jailbreak we received all of the apps. Here are the top 5 apps for your touch-screen media player from Apple.

1)App Tapp (A.K.A Installer.app)

Yes very obvious why this is number one, but they also do a very good job with it. App Tapp allows you to add applications from various sources to your iPod touch/iPhone with just a tap of the install button. Version 3 looks great and with the update for it still functions very well.

2)SummerBoard

Once again this is almost required to run applications (at least on the touch). You can customize icons, background, dock backgrounds, and the status bar through themes downloaded from App tapp. Some themes aren’t great, but for the most part it gives you some good customization. Its rival, Customize, doesn’t function properly on the touch so I can’t say much about it.

3)NES

We all love a good break from all the hard work of school or work. NES (or iNES) is just as the name says. It’s a NES emulator that works very well. The controls are ok, but can be annoying if you miss the key. It performs well and covers about all the basic features of an emulator.

4)Apollo IM

A fantastic IM client. There are a couple others available, but this one seemed very finished and worked well on my touch. It supports multiple accounts at once (which I never used, but seemed very straight to setup and use). A great alternative to the web apps available.

5)Lights Off

A very simple game that is addictive and hard. The game I like and the interface is very nice and suites my touch. There are many levels and a great way to pass some time.

Honorable Mentions

Five Dice: A Yatzee game

Tap Tap Revolution: A fun game modeled after DDR

I’m sure we will see a surge of 3rd Party apps with the SDK. Personally I would like a good RSS (the one available is annoying and needs work). A mobile word processor would be nice and a handy tool. I’m sure wireless syncing will come soon and can’t wait for it! Yes, I understand Installer and Summerboard are kind of essential, but they are 3rd party and function extremely well.

Cheers,
Tommy

Looks like some hackers have figured out how to backport the latest firmware from the Ipod Classic to their older 5 and 5.5 g siblings. Article found over @ the Giz says its a little quirky and not bullet proof yet. You can read more here

iPod touch Updated!

September 27th, 2007

Posted by Tommy

Apple today released their updates for the iPod touch and iPhone. On the iPod touch we saw the general updates and one very nice one. It would seem that some people who were experiencing problems with their negative screens don’t have the issue with this update! Yea! Now, this hasn’t fixed everyones, but it has fixed a good number. The only bad side is that the jailbreak might be even slower with this software update. :(
