iPod Touch Apps for $

January 15th, 2008

Steve Jobs announed at his Macworld keynote speech, that Apple will begin selling applications for the iPod Touch. They are: mail, stocks, weather, maps + chapter/ lyric support (new). You may recognize these apps from the iPhone, which is great, except that it’s going to cost iPod Touch owners $20 to get them. Unless of course you’ve jailbroke your touch.

With your Jailbroken iPod Touch, you can use the ScummVM game emulator to natively play a lot of classic games. The ScummVM wiki assures us that although it started as LucasArt’s only games, it’s since evolved for much more.

  1. Open Installer.app on a jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch. Jailbreak guide.
  2. Tap the “Sources” button in the bottom-right corner.
  3. Tap the “Edit” button in the top-right corner.
  4. Tap the “Add” button in the top-left corner.
  5. Enter http://urbanfanatics.com/scummvm.xml into the text area and tap “OK”.
  6. Installer will refresh your sources. It may close. If so, reopen it.
  7. ScummVM is now available for install in the Games section.

From the wiki:

You need original disks to run the games. We will not give support to anyone using illegal copies of the games. The only two games which are legal to download (Flight of the Amazon Queen and Beneath a Steel Sky) can be found at our downloads page. A number of games are still on sale, and for games not in the list go to eBay, into your attic or sometimes they’re still in local bargain bins.

FATAL ERROR Fix

December 4th, 2007

For people with bricked Fatal Error iPods, an easy fix is available:

  1. Exit itunes.
  2. With the touch plugged in, hold sleep and home button until it shuts off, but KEEP holding them until the apple comes back on.
  3. When you see the apple, let go of the sleep button but still hold the home button until the “connect to iTunes” screen appears.
  4. Then, start up iTunes and it should recognize that your ipod needs to be restored and it worked for me that time.

Turn your iPod Touch into a Gameboy Advance, with a just released emulator for iPod Touch/iPhone, based on Expohase’s gpSP port.

Things that still need work:

  • Compatibility is lower than usual but many games are playable. This is being worked on as a high priority.
  • Sound output is disabled, but it IS being emulated. So performance will only get better as this feature gets worked on.
  • Auto frameskip might be off. Switch to manual frameskip if needed.
  • GUI and instructions need a lot of work.

You will need to obtain a copy of the GBA BIOS (gba_bios.bin) and place that under /Applications/gpSPhone.app/. For obvious legal reasons, we can’t provide a download for that.

Download: gpSPhone v0.0.4

Conceited Software has just released its GUI jailbreak. It’s not a one stop shop, and you will have to downgrade to 1.1.1 if you bought an iPod Touch with 1.1.2 installed. What the GUI does is perform the jailbreak after you run OktoPrep in 1.1.1 and then upgrade to 1.1.2. The Software runs under OS X and Windows, grabs the data off your iPod touch or iPhone, upgrades it with the Jailbreak, installs Installer.app and SSH.app, and reloads it back to your unit. The whole procedure takes about 10 minutes and after, you have a fully updated 1.1.2 jailbroken system.

Full instructions are in the README which comes with the GUI.
