Conceited Software has just released its GUI jailbreak. It’s not a one stop shop, and you will have to downgrade to 1.1.1 if you bought an iPod Touch with 1.1.2 installed. What the GUI does is perform the jailbreak after you run OktoPrep in 1.1.1 and then upgrade to 1.1.2. The Software runs under OS X and Windows, grabs the data off your iPod touch or iPhone, upgrades it with the Jailbreak, installs Installer.app and SSH.app, and reloads it back to your unit. The whole procedure takes about 10 minutes and after, you have a fully updated 1.1.2 jailbroken system.

Full instructions are in the README which comes with the GUI.

Online iPod Touch Jailbreaking

October 29th, 2007

Jailbreaking your iPod Touch just got easier. Simply point Mobile Safari to jailbreakme.com and it will use the TIFF exploit and allow you to install AppSnapp. This will jailbreak your iPod Touch and allow you to install applications and games.

  1. Jailbreaks iPhone/iPod Touch on 1.1.1
  2. Patches Springboard to load third party apps
  3. Activates non-AT&T iPhones automatically, while leaving already activated phones alone
  4. Fixes YouTube on non-AT&T iPhones automatically, while leaving already activated phones alone
  5. Installs Installer.app v3.0b5 on the iPhone/iPod Touch
  6. Fixes Apple’s TIFF bug, making your device MORE secure than it was without AppSnapp!

Since the introduction and jailbreak of the iPhone many apps have been created to extend the functionality of it. And with the iPod touch jailbreak we received all of the apps. Here are the top 5 apps for your touch-screen media player from Apple.

1)App Tapp (A.K.A Installer.app)

Yes very obvious why this is number one, but they also do a very good job with it. App Tapp allows you to add applications from various sources to your iPod touch/iPhone with just a tap of the install button. Version 3 looks great and with the update for it still functions very well.

2)SummerBoard

Once again this is almost required to run applications (at least on the touch). You can customize icons, background, dock backgrounds, and the status bar through themes downloaded from App tapp. Some themes aren’t great, but for the most part it gives you some good customization. Its rival, Customize, doesn’t function properly on the touch so I can’t say much about it.

3)NES

We all love a good break from all the hard work of school or work. NES (or iNES) is just as the name says. It’s a NES emulator that works very well. The controls are ok, but can be annoying if you miss the key. It performs well and covers about all the basic features of an emulator.

4)Apollo IM

A fantastic IM client. There are a couple others available, but this one seemed very finished and worked well on my touch. It supports multiple accounts at once (which I never used, but seemed very straight to setup and use). A great alternative to the web apps available.

5)Lights Off

A very simple game that is addictive and hard. The game I like and the interface is very nice and suites my touch. There are many levels and a great way to pass some time.

Honorable Mentions

Five Dice: A Yatzee game

Tap Tap Revolution: A fun game modeled after DDR

I’m sure we will see a surge of 3rd Party apps with the SDK. Personally I would like a good RSS (the one available is annoying and needs work). A mobile word processor would be nice and a handy tool. I’m sure wireless syncing will come soon and can’t wait for it! Yes, I understand Installer and Summerboard are kind of essential, but they are 3rd party and function extremely well.

Cheers,
Tommy

Apple has announced that they will be releasing an SDK for native iPhone/Touch application development by February.

Let me just say it: We want native third party applications on the iPhone, and we plan to have an SDK in developers’ hands in February. We are excited about creating a vibrant third party developer community around the iPhone and enabling hundreds of new applications for our users. With our revolutionary multi-touch interface, powerful hardware and advanced software architecture, we believe we have created the best mobile platform ever for developers.

Good news for all those iPod Touch owners who would rather not jailbreak their Touch.

Looks like some hackers have figured out how to backport the latest firmware from the Ipod Classic to their older 5 and 5.5 g siblings. Article found over @ the Giz says its a little quirky and not bullet proof yet. You can read more here

As the title suggests, there’s a one-step process for all you PC user’s out there wanting to Jailbreak your iPod Touch.

Prerequisites

  • iPod 1.1.1 firmware installed: Check on your iPod with Settings->General->About
  • A copy of iTunes installed on your computer that is able to sync with your iPod
  • You need a wi-fi connection on your iPod to do the initial TIFF hack (visiting one link with Safari). An internet connection is not required for the rest of the jailbreak
